1996 Paradise Pisces

Phillip Whalen, Thirdbase

American Poet
1923-2002

One of the six poets to read at the Six Gallery on October 13, 1955. Whalen was a Reed College friend of Lew Welch and Gary Snyder. Like Snyder, Whalen became immersed in Zen Buddhist religion and culture. In 1973 he was ordained as a Zen monk.

Jack Kerouac described Whalen as "180 pounds of poet meat."

In Kerouac's books, Whalen is Warren Coughlin (Dharma Bums) and Ben Fagin (Big Sur).

Whalen was called up this season to the Pisces after some impressive years playing with the Dharma Beats.
