The Umpire Plates at the Cosmic Baseball Association
How Much is Good Judgment Worth?
With regard to an umpire's pay, records indicate that the American Association in 1883 paid its umpires $140 per month with a $3 per diem. John Gaffney who joined the National League in 1884, was paid $2500 plus expenses for the 1888 season. At the time this amount exceeded most player salaries. In the 1990s professional umpires working in the Major Leagues are offered a starting salary around $60,000 and some $200 per day for hotel, meal and transportation expenses. Some veteran umpires make over $200,000.
