American Indian Chief (1831-1890)
Tatanka Iyotake of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux was brave, had fortitude, was generous, had wisdom. These were the traits that made the man, known to the paying customers of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as Sitting Bull, a great warrior and leader. Born in the area that the white man named South Dakota, Sitting Bull became a Sioux warrior and was one of the three Indian chiefs to defeat Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. After that battle, Sitting Bull led his people into Canada. In 1881 he returned to the United States and was imprisoned for two years. In 1883 he traveled with the Wild West Show, always attracting attention as the stereotypical Indian chief.
