Pete Rose was banned from baseball by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball 25 years ago.

"Many feel that Rose has done his time, and should at least be admitted to the Hall of Fame as the all-time hits leader. Now Sports Illustrated has taken up the cause, publishing a book entitled 'Pete Rose: An American Dilemma,' which was excerpted in a cover story which declared, 'Itís Time to Rethink Pete Rose.'" (Tom Jackman, † Washington Post. March 10, 2014)

The standard anti-Rose line is that he is being kept out for the good of baseball, that his actions were an insult to the integrity of the game. Integrity? At these ticket prices? You're kidding me. Endorsements, free agency, television markets, licensed souvenirs and trinkets, skyboxes, not to mention multimillion-dollar contract negotiations and players strikes ó the game is all about money. I have nothing against the profit motive, but let's not pretend baseball is some kind of morality play enacted for the benefit of a needy society. It is a business. (James S. Robbins, National Review. December 13, 2002)

After ten years denying he had violated baseball's "no gambling" rule, Rose admitted he had bet on major league baseball games when he was managing the Cincinnati Reds. He has since sought forgiveness and a "second chance."

There is some speculation that Rose will be "un-banned" when the current Commissioner of Major League Baseball retires early next year. MLB has given Rose permission to attend the 2015 All Star Game festivities (Cincinatti is the site of the 2015 All Star Game).

Others are opposed to un-banning Rose. The man who led Major League Baseball's investigation into Rose's gambling habits and a son of the Commissioner who originally imposed the ban, do not support Rose's desire to be removed from MLB's "ineligible list.".

(NOTE: The Cosmic Baseball Association supports Rose's exclusion from the Hall of Fame. However, the CBA's Pete Rose Hall of Fame Study Group will reconsider it's Pete Rose Hall of Fame policy based, in part, on the results of the Pete Rose Reconsideration Series. This game is part of that series.)
