The number of baseball-related sites on the World Wide Web continued to increase remarkably during 1998. A wide variety of sites are available to the baseball fan, historian and athlete. Most search engines contain thousands of listings related to baseball in general. However the change in Major League Baseball-related sites has not been as dramatic. The Alta Vista search engine, which contains the most baseball-related listings of the search utilities sampled, showed a remarkable 12-month increase in the number of "baseball" listings (from 700,000 to 3.65 million). However, the increase in the number of "Major League Baseball" listings was comparatively miniscule (from 66,586 to 67,042). (During the same period the number of "cosmic baseball" site listings increased modestly from 742 to 778.) [See Search Engine Site Results].
The data on this plate was compiled by researchers at the Cosmic Baseball Research Alliance (COBRA) on December 22, 1998 and represents activity between January and December 1998.
