Mata Hari
Also known as Margaretha Geertruida Zelle Macleod, the archetype of the seductive femalespy. Mata Hari is known to us as a dancer, courtesan and allegedly a spy for Germany duringWorld War I. Tall, attractive, Mata Hari, which is supposed to be a Malay expression meaning"eye of the day", became a successful dancer in Paris and elsewhere in Europe. Her success inpart came from her willingness to dance practically naked in public. Apparently she had a fetishfor military officers for many of her numerous lovers were soldiers. The French arrested her forespionage on February 13, 1917. She was tried in July by a military court and shot by a firingsquad on October 15. She was 41 years old.
