A former University of Oregon wrestler by the 1960s Kesey was the de facto leader of a psychedelic militia known as the Merry Pranksters. This army of cultural revolutionaries traveled around in a bus driven by Neal Cassady.

Kesey is also the author of several novels, most notably Sometimes a Great Notion and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Described as an "Oregonian woodsman novelist who had migrated to California after reading Kerouac's On The Road."
