The Rule of Words

You make rules as if you really think I could follow them
it's human nature to draw lines
that don't connect
you think the rules will govern the spirit
or maybe that underneath the rules
there will be principles I will respect
you honor me
if you think I have principles
like scruples I accidentally ate them

I can follow you
that's a convenient and very different story
a story that pretends to be about rules
but is really about you
inside and outside
that's my cup of tea for two
or
I can kinda dance to that tune
it's got a good beat
and the words are nice.
