1996 Paradise PiscesJohn Joyce, an Irish tax collector, a fugitive from debt, had ten children. The oldest was James, a contender for the honor of being the 20th century's supreme innovative architect of fiction. Some consider James Joyce the greatest writer of the century. Acknowledged as one of the first and best practitioners of the "stream of consciousness" method of writing, his books have extended their influence to all facets of modern literary output.
Joyce's first published work was a book of poems, Chamber Music (1907). He then published a volume of short stories, Dubliners (1914), and his first novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1914-1915) appeared in serial form in the magazine The Egoist. His only play, Exiles, was written in 1914 and published four years later. Joyce's masterpiece, Ulysses, which takes place during a single day, June 16, 1904, was first published in 1922. Because of its sexual explicitness, the novel could not legally available in the United States until 1933. Joyce's final work, Finnegan's Wake (1939), while eagerly awaited was not particularly well received. Nevertheless, entire academic careers have been built on the study of Finnegan's Wake.
