Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

Jackie O, first lady of the later American 20th century. Like Eleanor Roosevelt she was one of the most influential and popular first ladies. The cultural obsession with the Kennedy family in America was as much about her as it was about Joe Kennedy and his children.

She was about style and image but also about substance. The world maintained its gaze on her after the tragic assassination of her husband, John F. Kennedy in 1963. She married the very wealthy Aristotle Onassis, a Greek shipping tycoon, and later returned to New York and worked in the publishing industry.

Her death in 1994 only enhanced her cultural stature as a woman of great class, grace, fashion, and style.
