Edmund Husserl

1859-1938
Husserl was the founder of Phenomenology and one of the 20th centuries most influential philosophers. His work influenced Heidegger and Sartre. Husserl himself was influenced by his teacher, Franz Brentano. Husserl attempted to ponder subjective experience without reference to a priori criteria. For Husserl, consciousness exists only in relation to the object it considers. Phenomenology takes as its subject the study of the structure of experience. Husserl's works include: Logical Investigations (1900-01); Ideas (1913); The Phenomenology of Internal Time-Consciousness (1928); Formal and Transcendental Logic (1929).
