Herbert Huncke

Catcher/Outfield

1915-1996

Beat Generation Muse

In 1944 William Burroughs met Herbert Huncke when he sold the Times Square citizen a gun and some drugs. Huncke was born in Massachusetts but grew up in Chicago where, as a teenager, he became addicted to drugs and embarked on a life of hustling and crime. He moved to New York in 1939.

Burroughs, who was fascinated by the underworld of crime and drugs, befriended Huncke and introduced him to Kerouac and Ginsberg. Huncke in turn, turned the Beat Generation fathers on to heroin and life in the drug subculture. Huncke is credited with providing the work "beat" to these writers. In the jargon of Times Square hustlers and addicts, to be "beat" was to be down and out. You were beat but free when you had nothing left to lose.

Huncke shares with Neal Cassady a similar status within the Beat Generation vortex. Both were examples of marginal characters in a crumbling culture.

Though not primarily a writer, Hunkce did publish his autobiography Guilty of Everything in 1990.

When Huncke died in 1996, he was living alone, enrolled in a methadone treatment program in New York.

As a young teenager, I had met several girls that I was attracted to, and one that I had sex with. I was primarily a homosexual at that time. In fact, I was going through many changes about my homosexuality. I didn't know whether I was purely homosexual, or bisexual. In fact, I didn't know if I could have sex with a woman for a long time. Well, I say for a long time. I was about 16 or 17 before I actually had sex with a chick, and then that was very quick and over with and done. After that, occasionally I'd ball with a girl, so I could have sex with women.
