Martin Heidegger

1889-1976
Heidegger was an assistant to Husserl at the University of Freiburg. He was initially a leader of the phenomenological movement but as his work matured he became a Kierkegaardian existentialist. Jean-Paul Sartre, leader of the French existentialists was Heidegger's student.
Heidegger focused on the meaning of "being". More specifically, the human being. The problem of being is an ontological problem and "truth" is found in "unconcealment" or "revealment" of the world, which man is very much a part of. While significantly influenced by the religious existentialism of Kierkegaard, Heidegger, like his student Sartre, was a secular existentialist.
