Allen Ginsberg

American Poet (1926-1997)

His father was a published poet, high school teacher and a Jewish left-winger. His mother was a communist and nudist who eventually went insane and had a lobotomy. The product of this marriage produced one of the foremost American poets of this century.

Allen Ginsberg, bard of the Beat Generation and a radical father of the counter-culture, continues espousing his Zen Judaism ("be nice, don't fight") philosophy.

Ginsberg is an American poet in the tradition of Walt Whitman. His prophetic, visionary voice, rages against materialism while preaching peace and benevolence. While a college student at Columbia University Ginsberg met Jack Kerouac. Together, with their friends and fellow poets, they gave birth to the Beat Generation, a post-WW2 literary-cultural movement that preceded the counter-culture of the 1960s.

Ginsberg's public career as a poet began with his reading of his poem "Howl" at the legendary Six Gallery in San Francisco in October, 1955. His second major work, "Kaddish", was published in 1961 on the anniversary of his mother's death. In 1974, Ginsberg won the National Book Award for his collection of poetry called The Fall of America. In collaboration with the poet Anne Waldman, Ginsberg created the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

Ginsberg has also been dominant on the cosmic playing field. He has played all 12 of his years with the Dharma Beats and maintains a career .294 batting average. Last year he sat out most of the season so that he could do more writing. Ginsberg joined the Pisces for the 1995 season as a free agent.
