Sigmund Freud first experienced the cinema in 1909 during his visit to the United States to deliver lectures on psychoanalysis. One of his biographers writes that Freud was "generally anatgonistic to the cinema...[and] he did not believe that it would be possible to explain the theories of psychonanalysis on the silver screen." (Clark, p.462)

By the 1940s Freud's ideas had permeated American culture and Alfred Hitchcock helped disseminate those ideas in his role as a director of moving images. Psychoanalytic terms like "repression" and "neurosis" were popularized by mass media. Hitchcock once remarked insightfully and ironically that "television has done much for psychiatry by spreading information about it, as well as contributing to the need for it."

Parker Tyler, Magic & Myth of the Movies, 1947:

Even if all the evidence we had were limited to two films issued in 1946, Spellbound and The Seventh Veil there would be proof conclusive that Freud did not probe our dreams exactly in vain. Psychoanalysis is now part of the social texture, and if it is an overadvertised product of capitalism, it is likewise a clear-cut development of practices sanctified by an ancient planetary record...There is no question that psychiatry has vanquished astrology, tealeaf reading and yoga in settling problems of the heart and head...(pages 104 & 112)
