John Dewey

1859-1952
John Dewey NotesDewey began his explorations in philosophy as a Hegelian and neo-Kantian. Eventually he rejected Hegel's "absolutism" and accepted the "pragmatist" theories of C.S. Peirce.
Dewey developed his own epistemological system in his 1903 work called Studies in Logical Theory. Dewey's concepts of Instrumentalism, Operationalism, Functionalism and Experimentalism are outlined in that work.
Influenced by behavioristic psychology and by evolutionary naturalism, Dewey's pragmatism, following Perice and William James, required that theory be capable of being put into action.
Dewey's ethics flow from his pragmatist views. "Growth is the only moral end". Ethical goals are the fulfillment of human needs and desires, an increase in moral sensitivity, and a better social world. Dewey was an ethical relativist. Absolute good and evil do not exist. The greatest good is the elimination of the greatest evil.
In Democracy and Education (1916) Dewey explained that our schools should reflect community values. An articulate spokesman for the "progressive education" movement in the 1930s, Dewey recognized that the development of an informed citizen, a requirement for a successful democracy, was the primary function of education.
