Dalai Lamas @ Karmapas

A Cosmic Baseball Game

This is a game played among Tibetan Buddhists. The Dalai Lama leads the Gelug lineage of Tibetan Buddhists and the Karmapa is the traditional spiritual leader of the Kagyu lineage. Despite differences in the lineages there are similarities, not the least of which is that both blossomed in Tibet. Today, Tibet is a "protectorate" of the People's Republic of China (PRC). The PRC recognizes the Karmapa but not the Dalai Lama. The reasons are political not spiritual.

This cosmic baseball game focuses on the intersection of two Buddhist belief systems in the same area. With the growing interest in Buddhism in the United States we might anticipate a growing interest in baseball in present day Tibet. While yak racing is one Tibet's most popular national pastimes, baseball has made an appearance in some remote regions of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Nepal, according to tradition, around 500 BC. Despite spending years wandering he never actually visited Tibet, probably because of the difficult geography. Buddhism did not arrive in Tibet until nearly a thousand years after Siddhartha's birth.

The credit for the fertilization of Buddhism in Tibet goes to Songtsan Gampo, born in the middle of the 6th century and ruler of the last Tibetan Empire. He united the disparate nomadic warrior clans spread out on the Tibetan Plateau. These were the remnants of the Mongols and others, seemingly unlikely to embrace the pacifism of the Buddha. Tibet embraced Buddhism because its Emperor saw its potential to quiet down the fever that kept so many at each other's throats.

Gampo's interest in Buddhism was political and inspired by two simultaneous marriages. One marriage was to Bhrikuti, a princess from Nepal and the other marriage was to a Chinese Princess, Wengcheng. Both wives were Buddhists. Historians suggest this explains why Tibetan Buddhism is so influenced by Indo-Nepali and Chinese Buddhist metaphors and symbols.

By the 8th Century AD there were a number of Buddhist lamas in Tibet (The word "lama" is Tibetan for the Hindu word "guru".) In the 11th century the Tibetan lama and poet Milarepa, who visited and studied in India, brought back important Buddhist knowledge to his motherland.
