Lieutenant Calley was commander of the Charley Company involved in the My Lai massacre during the United States' war in Vietnam. On March 16, 1968, Calley led his men to a small hamlet in the village of Son My located in the Quang Ngai province on South Vietnam's northeastern coast. Military photographers captured on film graphic images of bodies dumped in ditches. The victims: mostly women, children, and old men.

On March 29, 1971, Calley, alone, was found guilty by court-martial of killing at least 22 Vietnamese civilians.
