Personal Cosmic Game

1967 Boston Red Sox @ The Psychedelic Club

ROSTERS LINESCORE BOXSCORE SCORECARD NOTES Home

The Boston Red Sox are a popular Major League Baseball (MLB) team representing the city of Boston, Massachusetts in the American League. The Red Sox play in Fenway Park, one of the oldest MLB ballparks and home of the Green Monster (a wall in left field). In 1967, after nearly a decade of playing sub-par baseball they transformed themselves into the "impossible dream" team and won the American League pennant. Not quite ready to stop disappointing their fans, the Red Sox lost the seventh game of the 1967 World Series to the National League's St. Louis Cardinals.

The Psychedelic Club has its origins inside the 1961 academic grove of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The team's name comes from a 2010 book about the club by Don Lattin, The Harvard Psychedelic Club. In discussing the cultural importance of the club, Lattin writes, "it changed the way Americans think, practice medicine, and view religion; that is, [the Psychedelic Club] changed nothing less than the way we look at mind, body, and spirit." At the core of this club are four individuals, Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), Timothy Leary, Huston Smith and Andrew Weil. Other members of the team represent individuals who came into contact with these core players and their psychedelic ideas.

Several months before the Red Sox met the Cardinals in the 1967 World Series, Timothy Leary delivered his famous slogan "tune in, turn on, drop out" at the Gathering of the Tribes in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park (January 1967). High on 300 micro grams of LSD, Leary was joined at the gathering by his former Harvard University colleague Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) and American poet Allen Ginsberg and the Grateful Dead rock band and political activist Jerry Rubin, among thousands of others...The gathering was billed as a "human be-in."

In 1967 Carl Yastrzemski was the star player on the Boston Red Sox baseball team. He was the American League's Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the league's batting champion and home run champion and runs batted in (RBI) leader. He was also a 1967 member of the American League All-Star team and a Gold Glove award winner and the "Athlete of the Year", an award conferred by the Associated Press.

Both Boston and San Francisco had their 1967 summers of love. In Boston, they were loving the impossible dream team; in San Francisco, they were loving themselves.

The goal of the 1967 Boston Red Sox was to become baseball's World Champions by winning the World Series. The goal of the Harvard Psychedelic Club was to turn on the world to mind-expanding drugs. The Red Sox got to the World Series but lost the championship to the St. Louis Cardinals (because impossible dreams are impossible). The Psychedelic Club got to the American center stage but failed to turn the world on (because the Club dropped out).
