Black Mass

A Cosmic Baseball Game

The movie Black Mass is commercial entertainment with many people viewing it who know nothing about Whitey except what they have read in national newspapers...A lot of years and hard work went into it, hopefully people will find it interesting to watch. A fact finding mission? No just two hours of solid moviemaking. (Source: "Norwood Born" comment at Matt Connolly's blog "The Trial of Whitey Bulger")

But the whens, wheres and whos in this fictionalized account make hash of the sprawling real story. It suggests Bulger became what he was because his son died and then his mother died, too. It imbues [FBI Agent John] Connolly with too much influence on both Bulger brothers, and it puts too much blame on Connolly alone. Truth is, no one in the FBI ever challenged Connolly directly. But many benefited from the “devil’s deal” and either helped out or looked the other way. For those of us who came close enough to look under the hoods of our cars, as I did on more than one occasion, the terror was much more subtle.

I’ll give you an example: More than 30 years ago, the late, legendary crime reporter Paul Corsetti and I worked on a story about the murder of Louis Litif. He was a bookmaker who’d run afoul of Bulger and turned up dead in the South End in the trunk of his car.

In the course of asking questions, Corsetti got a call to meet a tipster in a bar near Quincy Market. Paul waited until almost one in the morning and was about to leave when a rather ordinary-looking guy approached and asked, “You’re Paul Corsetti, aren’t you?”

When Corsetti nodded, the stranger asked, “Do you know who I am?”

Paul shook his head, and the stranger told him: “I’m Whitey Bulger, mother (expletive).” Though Whitey announced that he killed people, what he told Corsetti was far more terrifying. He described the make, model, color and license plate of the car Paul’s wife used and the name of the daycare center where she dropped their daughter off.

That is the kind of terror that forced Paul Corsetti to come to work carrying a permitted gun. I never mentioned it to my wife. (Source: "‘Black Mass’ fails to plumb heart of an evil soul" column by Peter Gelzinis. Boston Herald: Thursday, September 17, 2015)

Less than a mile away from the special screening of BLACK MASS at the Coolidge Corner Theater on September 16, 2015, is the Busy Bee Cafe on Beacon Street. Gangsters from Boston used to meet there. We know this because in the 1980s wiretaps were placed in the napkin holders at the Busy Bee. (Source: Shelly Murphy - Bulger Trial Blog- June 21, 2013 3:33 PM)

The Real People team won the game. In reality, victims Brian Halloran, Deborah Hussey and John McIntyre are dead. Criminals Stephen Flemmi and James Bulger have been convicted and are serving jail sentences. Ex-FBI agent John Connolly is in prison. Only criminal John Martorano, who has confessed to 20 murders, is free and living in Milton, Massachusetts. FBI agents John Morris and Robert Fitzpatrick have retired from the Bureau.

On the losing side there is talk of actor Johnny Depp winning an Academy Award for his portrayal of James "Whitey" Bulger. But Depp also generated some controversey when he said he was "glad that he [Bulger] got away." A wife of one of Bulger's victims said,

"This is not Hollywood, this is the real thing here. How can you be glad that someone who killed a lot of people goes on the run? How can you have compassion for that person knowing what he's done?" (Source digitalspy.com]
