
Archimedes 

Mathematician and Inventorc. 287-212 B.C.

Specialized in the field of mechanics and hydrostatics. Devised the "Archimedean screw" for raising water. Discovered principle of buoyancy: a body immersed in fluid loses weight equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. Wrote treatises on volumes of spheres and cylinders, on the value of pi, on spirals, on the center of gravity, etc.
