Taft threw out the first ball during the Washington Senators' April 14, 1909 opening baseball game. He became the first president to do so and because the experience was so pleasant Taft decided to make it an annual event. (Taft watched Walter Johnson throw a one-hit shutout as the Senators beat the Philadelphia Athletics 3-0.)
