This season's Jack Kerouac Memorial Game was played between different Kerouac-related groups configured at the Yahoo internet portal. Yahoo Groups began in 1998 as Yahoo Clubs and the Clubs represented a new form of internet interactivity. The Clubs were an evolution of the concept developed in 1986 by the designers of the LISTSERV internet mailing list software. (In 2000 Yahoo acquired eGroups which had become a successful internet organizer of groups.) In the middle 1990s Jack Kerouac fans seeded the internet with their passion. As the World Wide Web evolved on the internet a number of sites about Kerouac and his Beat Generation brothers appeared, some spasmodically and briefly; others, like Levi Asher's Literarey Kicks were more resilient and endured. Kerouac scholars and fans found a dynamic place at the BEAT-L, a listserver mailing list run by an honorable librarian at the Brooklyn College Library. The list self-destructed and re-emerged at eGroups and eventually the remnants became the "subterraneansgroup" at Yahoo. There are today approximately 75 Kerouac and/or Beat Generation-related groups at Yahoo. The players in this personal cosmic baseball game have been selected from those Yahoo groups. The splitting of the selected players into two teams was arbitrary and random. Group 2 won the game, but an analysis of the box score and the score card do not indicate why Group 2 defeated Group 1...beyond having superior cosmic baseball talent. |
