The Jack Kerouac Memorial Cosmic Baseball Game is played annually on Jack Kerouac's birthday. Had he survived, Kerouac would be celebrating his 87th birthday today. How different is America today compared to the America Kerouac departed from in 1969? While packet-switching technology was emerging at the end of the 1960s, this cosmic baseball game could not have been played because there were no "websites" to connect to in 1969. Some chronologists tie the birth of the internet to the installation of the first Information Message Processors (IMPs). The first IMPs were functioning less than two months before Kerouac died. Still, the "www" part of the internet was not tangible until 1989. In 1969, it was the Beatles more than the Beat Generation that preoccupied American culture. Paul McCartney married Linda Eastman and John Lennon wed Yoko Ono. In 1922, Warren Harding installed the first radio in the White House just a month before Kerouac was born. And history tells us that on March 12, 1922 it was a "fair, mild Sunday in Lowell [Massachusetts]."
The Literary Kicks website, one of the best of the Beat Generation-related websites, was this game's Most Cosmic Player. Not because of the website's quality content but because going four-for-four, including a stolen base, and executing a perfect bunt that scored the game winning run...well, how much more is needed to become a particular game's most valuable player? The Kerouac Family put up a good fight. As usual Kerouac's mother, Gabrielle, the team's catcher, did a good job with the bat and managed to steal a base. She also started the game with a throwing error that led to the Beat Museum website scoring the game's first run. Jack's second wife, Joan Haverty Kerouac, led off the Kerouac's fifth inning with a towering solo homerun deep into centerfield.
In the end, this cosmic baseball game belonged to the Kerouac World Wide Web Sites.
