Whenever these perennial rivals meet there is going to be exciting cosmic baseball. When it is a season opener, there's an almost spooky atmosphere afoot as players and fans think that the team that wins the opener will go on to win the last game played in the season*. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Pisces were down 3-2. Pitcher Eddie Carmel flies out to leftfield and thirdbaseman Henry Longfellow grounds out to the shortstop. Rookie Charles Ponzi has an amazing and long at bat and finally draws a walk off the tiring Neal Cassady. Firstbaseman "Fats" Domino strides to the plate looks at one fastball strike and clobbers the second fastball offered by Cassady out of Paradise Park. Score 4-2, Pisces. Amen. The game essentially ended there despite a brief scare in the top of the ninth when Beat poet and secondbaseman Philip Whalen got a single and shortstop Lucien Carr sacrificed and moved Whalen into scoring position at secondbase. But alas, the tired Neal Cassady flied out to center and centerfielder Charles Plymell grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.
