The SUPERBAS have been playing cosmic baseball since 1983. This year's team has four rookies: Gillian Anderson (P), Christina Applegate (OF), Tèa Leoni (P), and Rob Schneider
(IF). Jay North returns as the team's field manager but
coaches Roone Arledge and Sid Caesar have been replaced by
the comedy writing team of Sam Denoff and Bill Persky.
Owner Howdy Doody and General Manager Clarabell have
tinkered rather than overhaul the team. Pitching has been a
perennial problem for the Superbas but Steve Allen, Milton
Berle, Raymond Burr, Phil Silvers, and Robert Young all
return for their fifteenth season making the Superba pitchers
the longest tenured pitching staff at the CBA.
The GRAPHITES are a new cosmic team for
the 1997 Season and they have been commissioned for service
in the CBA Under League.
The Graphites consist of notable graphic designers, illustrators
and typographers including Herb Lubalin, Peter Max and
Susan Kare. The team is managed by the printer William
Caxton and the eminent Italian book printer Manutius owns
the squad.
Over the years, when the
VANGUARDS (Artists) meet the DRAGONS (Musicians), the games
are usually very exciting and close. This game was the
exception. The Vanguards quickly sprinted into the lead with a
4-run second inning. The Dragons never recovered despite
executing excellent defense. Both teams have relatively weak
pitching staffs and good defense won't really solve that
problem. Better pitchers will.

With the landing of the Pathfinder spacecraft on the planet
Mars a renewed interest in things Martian has occurred.
Almost a year ago the life-on-Mars debate was reignited when
scientists claimed a rock from a meteorite found in Antartica
contained water molecules consistent with the Martian
atmosphere. The fascination with the planet Mars is reflected in the rich science and science fiction we humans have created and distributed. Novels, movies and exploration spacecraft to the planet attest to this fascination.
Two Cosmic Baseball Association teams have also been created to reflect this interest:
1992 Barsoomtown Explorers
The 1997 Martian Kinotypes are a new team this season and they compete in the cosmic Under League. The Kinotypes consist of movies about the planet Mars. The official team roster consists of over 40 hypertext links to Mars-related sites on the World Wide Web.
The Pathfinder's rover exploration vehicle is called Sojourner. This name was given to the vehicle to honor Sojourner Truth an influential abolitionist and women's rights activist in the 19th century.Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree, played cosmic baseball for two seasons (1995 & 1996) as a pitcher for CBA's Vestal Virgins team.
