It is the top of the eleventh inning. The Pisces and the Presidents are locked in a tie, 5 runs each. Felicia Gleaton is the leadoff batter for the Pisces. Three strange curve balls and Gleaton, still looking, returns to the bench. President pitcher, Chester Arthur, is throwing clever stuff. Elizabeth Barrett Browning grounds out to the shortstop. Up tp the plate steps Pisces thirdbaseman Henry Wadsworth Longefellow. Arthur's first pitch is a fast ball high and tight. Longfellow keeps his bat on his shoulder, doesn't flinch and the count is 1-0. Arthur's second pitch is also a fast ball, but this one is straight and juicy, Longfellow swings, misses. If you were the 21st President of the United States facing one of the first publically popular American poets, what would your third pitch be? And if you were the author of "Evangeline" and "The Song of Hiawatha" and you were facing a Republican President, what pitch would you be looking for? Let the record show that the President's pitch was another fast ball, and that the poet's swing was clean and sweet. The tie was broken and Longfellow's homerun turned out to be the game winning difference. It was a poetic start to the new season.
