Amiri Baraka
(Born LeRoi Jones) American poet, and former husband of Hettie Cohen Jones. Baraka, as poet laureate of New Jersey, wrote a controversial poem, "Somebody Blew Up America", about the 9/11/01 World Trade terrorist attack. |
Joanna McClure
Poet whose association with the Beat Generation occurred as a result of her relationship with now former husband, Michael McClure. |
THE BEAT GENERATION refers to a literary and cultural phenomenon in the United States that flourished in the late 1940s and 1950s. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs are usually recognized as the founders and inspirers of the movement. Kerouac wrote a number of novels but On the Road (written in the early 1950s and published in 1957) has become the symbolic novel of the Beats just as Ginsberg's Howl (1955) has become the Beat Generation's symbolic poem. |
