In her book, Writing Tricksters: Mythic Gambols in American Ethnic Literature Jeanne Rossier Smith writes that tricksters are "shape-shifters who dwell on borders, at crossroads and between worlds." Tricksters live in that borderland space populated by the fellaheen and other outcasts. In fact, often it is the case that the chauffeur shuttling souls between here and there is a certified trickster. For tricksters are well-known as mediators between different worlds. Observers have noted that tricksters are the antidote to the tension between opposites. They attack tension with humor. The also "shock, sensationalize [and] appear morally bankrupt" as they subvert convention and deny categorization. The MERRYLAND TRICKSTERS have been created to honor the rich and varied traditions of The Trickster. | ||
